Ron's Gone Wrong (2021)

Image
Ron's Gone Wrong By Emily Hubbard  A cautionary tale of the impact of technology that’s more heavy-handed than it needs to be. 3/5 Cameras  Directed by: Sarah Smith, Jean-Philippe Vine, and Octavio E. Rodriguez Where to find it: Jack Dylan Grazer, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Olivia Colman Where to find it: Disney + No Copyright Infringement Intended Should children be allowed access to social media sites? It’s a seemingly age-old question that’s been debated from every angle you could imagine. There are valid points to be made for each side of the argument and now 20 th Century Studios (who are now, much like almost every other media company, owned by Disney) have joined the conversation with the heart-warming, yet extremely heavy-handed, animated adventure Ron’s Gone Wrong. Set in a world where talking, digitally connected robots, or ‘b-bots’, have become children’s best friends, 11-year-old Barney (Jack Dylan Grazer) discovers that his ‘b-bot’, Ron (Zach Galifianakis...

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok By Emily Hubbard  Taika Waititi gives a much-needed makeover to the God of Thunder and crew 5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥 Directed by: Taika Waititi Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, and Tessa Thompson Where to find it: Disney + No Copyright Infringement Intended  The Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for short) is the world’s biggest movie (and now television) franchise. From the game-changing Iron Man to the unexpectedly great Guardians of the Galaxy, most people are likely to be aware of at least one entry in the ever-expanding superhero universe. You’d be forgiven, however, for not being all too familiar with the Thor franchise, as its first two movies are widely considered lacklustre compared to the rest of the MCU. However, just when it seemed like all hope was lost with the Asgardian God’s solo adventures, New Zealand powerhouse Taika Waititi swooped in and saved the day with the ultra-hilarious and refreshingly vibrant Thor: Ragnarok. F...

Licorice Pizza (2022)

Image
Licorice Pizza By Calum Whitfield Beautiful, funny, and charming, Licorice Pizza is a spectacular film barring one serious gripe. 3.5/5 Cameras  Written and directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson Starring: Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, at el Where to find it: In cinemas now No Copyright Infringement Intended  I was excited going into Licorice Pizza. The trailer had given promise to something joyful and fun, and with a masterful writer/director like Paul Thomas Anderson and a cast with some fresh faces for its leads (Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman) but with big names in support (Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper and more) I thought I was set for a wonderful experience in the cinema. For the most part, this came true yet walking out I couldn’t help but feel some disappointment and annoyance. Licorice Pizza follows Gary (Cooper Hoffman), a fifteen-year-old in LA coming to the end of his career as a child actor looking for a new angle for his life. He meets Alana (Ala...

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2022)

Image
The Tragedy of Macbeth By Emily Hubbard A visually breath-taking version of one of Shakespeare’s most well-revered tales 4/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥🎥   Directed by: Joel Coen Starring: Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand  Where to find it: In Select Cinemas and Apple TV +  No Copyright Infringement Intended  The story of Macbeth is one most people are familiar with in one way or another. Whether you’re a Shakespeare fanatic or simply only studied the play at school, you’ll most likely be aware of the tragic (pardon the pun) tale. With a story this famous it should come as no surprise that it’s been subject to countless adaptations throughout the years, and you’d be forgiven for not seeing the need for another. However, Joel Coen’s ability to create visually striking imagery, coupled with stellar performances by Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand makes for a truly unforgettable viewing experience. Directed by Joel Coen, in his solo directorial debut, The Tragedy of...

Malignant (2021)

Image
Malignant By Calum Whitfield Not particularly scary and slow to get going, somehow Malignant still manages to be frighteningly good fun  3.5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥.5 Directed by: James Wan Starring: Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, and Michole Briana White  Where to find it: Buy or Rent from Amazon Prime Video  No Copyright Infringement Intended This was one of my most anticipated films of 2021, but a series of unfortunate events meant I missed seeing it when it came out in cinemas. After waiting for it to be available on wide home release I finally got around to watching it, and all I can really say is I’m glad I got there in the end. Malignant follows Maddison (Annabelle Wallis) who begins the film pregnant and stuck in an abusive relationship. Following a particularly nasty incident of abuse in which Maddison’s head is knocked heavily into a wall, she locks her partner out of their bedroom. Maddison dreams of a figure that brutally kills her husband and wakes...

Succession (2018 - )

Image
Succession By Emily Hubbard HBO strikes again with a tale of family dysfunction that’s almost Shakespearean  5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥 Created by: Jesse Armstrong  Starring: Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Brian Cox, et al  Where to find it: HBO/Now TV No Copyright Infringement Intended  When you think of arguably some of the greatest TV shows of all time, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones (except the final season), and The Wire tend to spring to mind, and rather unsurprisingly they all share the same common denominator; they were all created by HBO. It should come as no surprise then, that the US network has another smash-hit on its’ hands with the multiple Emmy award-winning comedy-drama Succession. Now in its third season, Succession centres around the Roy family, the dysfunctional owners of global media conglomerate, and FOX News lookalike, Waystar RoyCo. Rumoured to be based on real-life media family the Murdoch’s, the Roy siblings, Kendall (Jeremy Strong)...

Don't Look Up (2021)

Image
Don't Look Up By Calum Whitfield  Satirical feature with an important message, Don’t Look Up is funny and relevant though a little heavy-handed and overlong. 3.5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥.5 Directed by: Adam McKay  Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, et al Where to find it: Netflix  No Copyright Infringement Intended  Political satire can be a dangerous game, particularly in recent times with political opinion in western society being the most divided it has been for decades. This makes a film like Don’t Look Up a risky venture almost guaranteed to be divisive. But with a large budget, a stellar cast, and a strong marketing push from Netflix, Don’t’ Look Up should be a sure-fire hit. But is it any good? Don’t Look Up focuses on a Ph.D. student Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and her teacher Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) who work in the field of astronomy. Kate notices a previously undiscovered comet in the sky which Randal...
