The King of Staten Island

Image
The King of Staten Island (2020) By Emily Hubbard Pete Davidson surprises in a gut-punching, funny ode to grief 4/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥🎥 Directed by: Judd Apatow  Starring: Pete Davidson, Marisa Tomei, and Bill Burr  Where to find it: Sky Cinema/Now TV  No Copyright Infringement Intended  Pete Davidson is known to many as Saturday Night Live’s resident stoner, and probably known by equally as many as a certain ponytailed popstar’s ex-fiancé, but what many people, myself included, have glossed over, is the amount of talent this 27-year-old man has, and the amount of trauma he’s been through. Directed by Judd Apatow, the man behind modern comedy classics such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, The King of Staten Island is a semi-biographical take on Pete Davidsons’s life. The film follows Scott Carlin (Pete Davidson), a weed-smoking aspiring tattoo artist who’s forced to get his life together after his mother Margie (Marisa Tomei) begins dating a man, Ray (Bill ...

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Image
Drag Me to Hell By Calum Whitfield Raimi’s return to his roots is a fun horror/black comedy well worth watching even if it does struggle to live up to its classic older siblings. 3.5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥.5 Directed by: Sam Raimi Starring: Alison Lohman, Lorna Raver, Justin Long, and Dileep Rao Where to find it: Netflix No Copyright Infringement Intended Sam Raimi is probably best known for his part in launching the ongoing superhero movie revolution with his Spider-Man trilogy beginning in 2002. Long before this, however, he made his name by creating the iconic horror franchise, The Evil Dead in 1980. In 2009, he returned to his horror roots with Drag Me to Hell. Was it worth the wait? Drag Me to Hell follows Christine Brown (Alison Lohman), a former country girl turned city loan officer looking to make some progress in her career. To do this, she decides she needs to act tougher to impress her boss and as such rejects an elderly woman called Sylvia Ganush (Lorna Raver) for an extension on...

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)

Image
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021 By Emily Hubbard Karen Gillan led team-up doesn’t punch as hard as it hoped 3/5 Cameras 🎥🎥🎥 Directed by: Navot Papushado Starring: Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, and Angela Bassett Where to find it: In Cinemas Now and on Sky Cinema  No Copyright Infringement Intended  If you were to pitch me a film with the premise ‘a female John Wick starring Karen Gillan and featuring Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett’ I would immediately throw a big wad of money at you and demand to watch it instantly on the biggest screen possible. Rather disappointingly though, Gunpowder Milkshake doesn’t live up to the high expectations its all-star cast attracted. The film stars Karen Gillan as Sam, a reluctant heroine and trained killer who was abandoned by her mother (also a trained killer named Scarlet, played by the ever-wonderful Lena Headey) as a child. Early on in the film, a series of events leads to Sam (Karen Gillan), and a group of female assassins, ha...

The New Mutants (2020)

Image
The New Mutants (2020)   By Emily Hubbard The last of the 20 th Century Studios X-Men franchise is perhaps the most disappointing of them all  1/5 Cameras 🎥 Directed by: Josh Boone Starring: Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Blu Hunt  Where to find it: Sky Cinema/ Now TV  No Copyright Infringement Intended In the film industry, when a movie’s release date gets moved back multiple times it’s usually not a good sign (unless it’s because of a global pandemic). After being delayed no less than 5 times, you’d have been forgiven for forgetting The New Mutants exists, and you’d be better off for it. Originally set for release on April 13 th 2018, this superhero ‘horror’, and the last X-Men film to be released by 20 th Century Studios before the company was bought by Disney, focuses on five teenage mutants being held in an eerie secret institution, run by Dr. Reyes (Alice Braga), that will supposedly train them to join the likes of Wolverine and Cyclops. All is not...

Saw (2004)

Image
Saw (2004) By Calum Whitfield  Iconic horror movie manages to hide a great little thriller under a ridiculous amount of flashbacks and filler 2.5/5 Cameras 🎥🎥.5 Directed by: James Wan Starring: Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, and Danny Glover Where to find it: Rent it on Amazon Prime Video No Copyright Infringement Intended  Saw is something of a modern classic (modern in a fairly loose sense; the film is now around 17 years old), having a reputation for being an early precursor of the popular “torture porn” genre, starting one of the most successful horror franchises of all time as well as launching the careers of its two creators, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Has it earned its reverence? Saw takes place in an interesting setting, focusing on two characters chained up in a bathroom with a dead body between the two of them. This tight setting is intriguing and exciting, suggesting that the film will be a tightly wound, fairly claustrophobic thriller. Our two characters, Dr. Law...

What We Do In The Shadows (2019- )

Image
What We Do In The Shadows (2019- ) By Emily Hubbard A vampire mockumentary with real bite 5/5 Cameras🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥 Written by Jemaine Clement Starring: Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Harvey Guillén Where to find it: BBC iPlayer  No Copyright Infringement Intended  Spin-offs can be a touchy subject. Most popular TV or movie franchises have branched out and attempted to widen the fictional world in which they are set, usually in an attempt to stay relevant and squeeze more money from fans (see poorly received Friends spin-off ‘Joey’ for example). It should, therefore, come as no surprise that finding a good spin-off is a rarity, but finding one even better than its already strong source material is practically unheard of, yet despite the odds, What We Do In The Shadows has managed to achieve this. Set in the same world, and with the same title, as the hilarious 2014 film written and directed by comedy titans Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, What We Do In The S...
