Television’s biggest night: The Emmy Awards is here again! Will anyone follow in the footsteps of last years' historic sweep by Schitt’s Creek? Ted Lasso or The Crown maybe?

Here are Emily’s predictions for how this year’s ceremony will go down! (This article only contains predictions for the acting categories)

 Best Comedy

The Nominees:

·         Black-ish

·         Cobra Kai

·         Emily in Paris

·         Hacks

·         The Flight Attendant

·         The Kominsky Method

·         PEN15

·         Ted Lasso

Who should win: Ted Lasso

Who will win: Ted Lasso – One of this years’ stand-out shows, the heart-warming football centred comedy starring Jason Sudeikis is likely to win in most, if not all, of the category’s it’s nominated in.

Best Drama

The Nominees:

·         The Boys

·         Bridgerton

·         The Crown

·         The Handmaid’s Tale

·         Lovecraft Country

·         The Mandalorian

·         Pose

·         This Is Us

Who should win: Lovecraft Country – After its undeserving cancellation, this flip on traditional horror stories should be awarded for its stellar storytelling and worldbuilding.

Who will win: The Crown – Much like Ted Lasso, The Crown seems certain to win in most of the category’s it’s nominated in.

Best Limited Series

The Nominees:

·         I May Destroy You

·         Mare of Easttown

·         The Queen’s Gambit

·         The Underground Railroad

·         Wandavision

*An incredibly strong category, this is one of the two categories’ this year where I believe every nominee has a shot of winning, making my predictions extremely hard

Who should win: Wandavision – Marvel’s first Disney + adventure took the audience through a whirlwind trip through different decades of classic sitcoms in an unexpectedly flawless manner and as such deserves its recognition.

Who will win: I May Destroy You – Michaela Coel’s tackling of sexual assault featured heavily on year-end lists in 2020, with Metacritic listing it as the best TV show of the year. It goes without saying that this undeniably phenomenal show deserves to take home the award.

Best Actress, Comedy

The Nominees:

·         Aidy Bryant – Shrill

·         Kaley Cuoco – The Flight Attendant

·         Allison Janney – Mom

·         Tracee Ellis Ross – black-ish

·         Jean Smart – Hacks

Who should win: Kaley Cuoco – The Flight Attendant – One of the standout shows of the past year, Kaley Cuoco’s performance as an alcoholic flight attendant entangled in the murder of a man she had a one-night stand with, is as hilarious as it is moving.

Who will win: Allison Janney – Mom – Having already won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series twice for the same role, the Oscar-winning actress is highly likely to win the award for her performance as a cynical recovering addict on the sitcom Mom.

Best Actor – Comedy

The Nominees:

·         Anthony Anderson – black-ish

·         Michael Douglas – The Kominsky Method

·         William H. Macy – Shameless

·         Jason Sudeikis – Ted Lasso

·         Kenan Thompson

Who should win: Jason Sudeikis – Ted Lasso

Who will win: Jason Sudeikis – Ted Lasso – As previously stated, I believe Ted Lasso will win in all of its categories. It would be a well-deserved win for Sudeikis, as his portrayal of the optimistic and kind-hearted Ted Lasso has warmed hearts across the world, including mine.

·         Olivia Colman – The Crown

·         Emma Corrin – The Crown

·         Mj Rodriguez – Pose

·         Jurnee Smollett – Lovecraft Country

Who should win: Jurnee Smollett – Lovecraft Country – Smollett gave a career-high performance in Lovecraft Country that, along with Jonathan Majors, carried that show and deserves to be awarded for it.

Who will win: Emma Corrin – The Crown – The Crown is likely to sweep in most of its’ nominated categories and this one is no exception. Corrin’s performance as Princess Diana was highly praised and one of the talking points of the year.

·         Cynthia Erivo – Genius: Aretha

·         Elizabeth Olsen – Wandavision

·         Anya Taylor-Joy – The Queen’s Gambit

·         Kate Winslet – Mare of Easttown

*This is the second of the two categories where I think all of the nominees have an equal chance of winning, making it particularly hard to make my predictions.

Who should win: Elizabeth Olsen – Wandavision – Olsen’s performance in Wandavision proved just how talented of an actress she is, seamlessly changing her character’s mannerisms each week to fit with the decade of sitcom the show was centred around.

Who will win: Kate Winslet – Mare of Easttown – Many have called Winslet’s performance a ‘career-best', with her receiving universal acclaim for her role, it seems highly likely that she will win in this category.

·         Brendan Hunt – Ted Lasso

·         Nick Mohammed – Ted Lasso

·         Paul Reiser – The Kominsky Method

·         Bowen Yang – Saturday Night Live

Who should win: Bowen Yang- Saturday Night Live – Bowen Yang’s role in SNL this year has been the best part of the show, with his now-iconic Titanic Iceberg sketch being a particular highlight. Even if he doesn’t win, I’m excited to see his role grow in future seasons of the show.

Who will win: Brett Goldstein – Ted Lasso - Serving as a writer and actor on the sports comedy, Goldstein steals every scene he’s in, making audiences laugh at his foul-mouthed outburst, and cry at his outbursts of sensitivity.
